GitLab Duo alternative: AI CodeOps
Weighing a GitLab Duo alternative? AI CodeOps works with GitLab and four other Git hosts, adds a release gate and signed evidence, and is free in beta.
GitLab Duo is GitLab's own set of AI features, and if your team lives in GitLab it is the obvious first thing to try. Teams look further when they also have code on other hosts, when they want a different kind of gate before changes ship, or when they do not want AI tied to their GitLab tier. This page explains how AI CodeOps compares and when Duo is the better choice.
GitLab Duo in one paragraph
GitLab's docs say "GitLab Duo provides AI-native features for every stage of the software development lifecycle", available in IDE extensions and the GitLab UI (GitLab docs). The Duo Agent Platform runs on GitLab.com, Self-Managed and Dedicated. It includes Agentic Chat, custom agents, a Developer Flow that converts issues into merge requests, a Code Review Flow and a Fix CI/CD Pipeline Flow, among others. As of October 18, 2026, GitLab's docs list Agentic Chat, Developer Flow, Code Review Flow and Fix CI/CD Pipeline Flow on the Free tier as well as Premium and Ultimate, and features on the Free tier require the purchase of GitLab Credits. The Security Analyst Agent and the SAST Vulnerability Resolution Flow are Ultimate only (Duo Agent Platform). Code Review Flow has been available on the Free tier on GitLab.com with GitLab Credits since GitLab 18.10 (Code Review Flow). GitLab Credits cost $1 each, and Premium is $29 per user per month billed annually (GitLab pricing).
Why teams look at AI CodeOps
More than one Git host
AI CodeOps connects to GitLab, GitHub, Bitbucket, Gitea and Forgejo from the same workspace. If some of your repositories are on GitLab and others are on GitHub or a Gitea server, you get one way of working across all of them. See the GitLab integration.
A gate built around AI changes
Every AI CodeOps change waits at a release gate: your tests, the AI findings review and the approvals your policies require. Approvals can require two people. A change whose AI review could not complete is held rather than passed. Several agents (reviewer, security auditor, tester) review each diff before a person sees it.
Evidence that travels
Each change has an Ed25519-signed evidence pack with the task, models, approvals and each vote, policy decisions, findings, tests, the merge request and the deployment. Anyone can verify a pack at /evidence/verify, without an account. That helps when an auditor or customer does not have access to your GitLab.
Spend you can cap
Spend caps apply per workspace and per workflow, and each session shows its cost. You choose a model tier (Economy, Standard, Premium or Auto) or bring your own provider key.
When GitLab Duo is the better choice
- All your code is in GitLab. Duo is built into the product you already use, with nothing else to sign in to, and agents and flows such as Developer Flow and Code Review Flow are listed on the Free tier too, paid with GitLab Credits.
- You want AI in the editor. Duo works in IDE extensions (GitLab docs) and includes Code Suggestions (Agent Platform). AI CodeOps is browser-only.
- You want AI across the whole GitLab platform. Duo's flows cover areas such as fixing CI/CD pipelines and, on Ultimate, SAST vulnerability resolution (Agent Platform). AI CodeOps works through your repository connection, not inside GitLab's own features.
- You want one vendor and one bill. Duo's agent features are paid for with GitLab Credits (GitLab pricing), so AI usage stays with GitLab.
Trying AI CodeOps on a GitLab project
Connect GitLab in your workspace, create a project from a repository, and start a session with a small task. The GitLab setup guide covers the connection, and the quickstart covers the first session. If you run GitLab alongside Gitea or Forgejo, see AI CodeOps for GitLab and Gitea teams. For a closer look at the two products, see AI CodeOps vs GitLab Duo.
Frequently asked questions
Does AI CodeOps work with GitLab?
Yes. You connect GitLab to a workspace, create a project from a repository, and AI CodeOps sessions open merge requests there.
Do I need a GitLab Premium or Ultimate subscription to use AI CodeOps?
No. AI CodeOps is a separate product with its own plans. It is free during the open beta.
Can I use GitLab Duo and AI CodeOps together?
Yes. They do not conflict. Duo works inside GitLab, and AI CodeOps works through your GitLab connection.
Can AI CodeOps run on our own servers next to self-managed GitLab?
Self-hosting is available only as an Enterprise option. Contact sales to discuss it.

- Choose GitLab Duo if you want AI across GitLab's own features, such as fixing CI/CD pipelines and, on Ultimate, resolving SAST vulnerabilities.
- Choose GitLab Duo if you need AI on your own models: GitLab Duo Self-Hosted runs Duo features on on-premise or private-cloud models.
- Choose GitLab Duo if you want AI usage on the same GitLab bill, paid with GitLab Credits.
