AI CodeOps vs GitLab Duo
AI CodeOps vs GitLab Duo, as of October 2026: GitLab's own AI agents and flows next to AI agents that write, test and gate changes on five Git hosts.
GitLab Duo and AI CodeOps both put AI agents to work on your code, but they start from different places. Duo is part of GitLab and works across GitLab's own features. AI CodeOps is a separate product that takes a task, writes and tests the change, and holds it until it has passed a gate. This page explains the difference and says when Duo is the better choice.
Summary, as of October 2026
GitLab describes Duo as AI features for the software development lifecycle, available in the GitLab UI and in IDE extensions (GitLab docs). Its Duo Agent Platform includes Developer Flow, which turns issues into merge requests or completes coding tasks in Agentic Chat or the GitLab Duo CLI (Duo Agent Platform). Its Code Review Flow reviews merge requests and runs as a CI/CD job, so it needs a runner (Code Review Flow). Duo works on GitLab.com, GitLab Self-Managed and GitLab Dedicated.
AI CodeOps is a browser-based platform where AI agents plan, build, review and test a code change. The change becomes a merge request only after its quality gates pass and a person approves it. It connects to GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea and Forgejo. See how AI CodeOps works.

Choose AI CodeOps if…
- You want AI agents to write and test the change, not only review it. A session's agents plan the task, write the change, run your tests and review the result. A release gate holds the change until the tests, the AI review and the approvals pass.
- Your code is on more than GitLab. AI CodeOps connects to Gitea and Forgejo as well as GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket. Duo works on GitLab.com, GitLab Self-Managed and GitLab Dedicated.
- You want a signed record and capped spend. Each change has a signed evidence pack that anyone can check at /evidence/verify. Spend caps apply per workspace and per workflow, and each session shows its cost.
Choose GitLab Duo if…
GitLab Duo is the better pick in several cases, and it is worth saying so plainly.
- All your code is in GitLab. Duo works in the GitLab UI on GitLab.com, Self-Managed and Dedicated, with no second product to connect.
- You want AI across GitLab's own features. Duo's flows cover work such as fixing CI/CD pipelines and, on Ultimate, resolving SAST vulnerabilities. AI CodeOps works through your repository connection, not inside GitLab's features.
- You need AI on your own models. GitLab Duo Self-Hosted runs Duo features on on-premise or private-cloud models. Hosting AI CodeOps yourself is an Enterprise option, and it runs on the platform's models or your own provider key.
- You want AI usage on the same GitLab bill. Duo's AI features are paid for with GitLab Credits.
- You want AI in the editor or the terminal. Duo features are available in IDE extensions, and the GitLab Duo CLI brings the Agent Platform to your terminal on Premium and Ultimate. AI CodeOps has no IDE extension or CLI.
Where each fits
GitLab Duo fits a team that does its work inside GitLab and wants AI on its issues, merge requests and pipelines. With automatic reviews turned on, its Code Review Flow reviews every merge request that isn't a draft, empty or excluded, including the ones people open by hand.
AI CodeOps fits a team that wants to hand a whole task to agents and keep a firm gate in front of what ships. A merge request opens only when tests pass, the AI review completed and no high or critical finding is open, and the same gate runs again before the console merges (quality gates). A code change needs an approved review from someone other than the person who launched the session, when the team has another approver (approvals and policies). AI CodeOps reviews only the changes made in its own sessions, not merge requests people open directly in GitLab.
Using both
The two products don't get in each other's way. AI CodeOps opens ordinary merge requests on your GitLab project, so the rest of your GitLab setup sees them like any other. A workable split is to let AI CodeOps take routine tasks from start to finish, and keep Duo for work inside GitLab: Agentic Chat, pipeline fixes, and review of the merge requests your developers open themselves. If some of your repositories live on Gitea or Forgejo, AI CodeOps covers those too. See AI CodeOps for GitLab and Gitea teams.
Moving work to AI CodeOps
You don't have to switch everything at once. Keep Duo running while you try it.
- Connect GitLab in AI CodeOps (Settings, then Git Providers) and create a project from one repository. The GitLab setup guide covers the connection.
- Invite one teammate, so approvals need a second person, and set a workspace budget.
- Take three or four tasks you would otherwise give Developer Flow, such as small issues, and run each one as a session. The quickstart walks through the first one.
- Review each change at the gate. Note what the review found, whether the tests ran, and how long approval took.
- Decide with those numbers whether to move more work over. The switch guide lays out a two-week pilot.
Frequently asked questions
Does AI CodeOps replace GitLab Duo?
Not necessarily. GitLab Duo works inside GitLab, on issues, merge requests and pipelines. AI CodeOps takes a task, writes and tests the change, and holds it at a gate. Many GitLab teams could use both.
Does AI CodeOps work with GitLab?
Yes. You connect GitLab to a workspace, create a project from a repository, and AI CodeOps sessions open merge requests there. A self-managed GitLab must have a public https address.
Can I use GitLab Duo and AI CodeOps on the same project?
Yes. AI CodeOps opens ordinary merge requests. With automatic reviews turned on for a project, GitLab's Code Review Flow reviews each merge request that isn't a draft, empty or excluded.
How do the prices compare?
AI CodeOps is free during the open beta, with a monthly AI token allowance, and Enterprise is priced per seat. GitLab lists Free at $0 per user per month with AI through GitLab Credits, and Premium at $29 per user per month billed annually.
Which one can run on our own infrastructure?
AI CodeOps self-hosting is for Enterprise customers only, on request, on your Kubernetes cluster. GitLab Duo Self-Hosted runs Duo features with on-premise or private cloud-hosted models, on GitLab Self-Managed and GitLab Dedicated for Government.
