AI CodeOps vs Sourcery

AI CodeOps vs Sourcery, as of October 2026: an AI reviewer and security scanner for GitHub and GitLab next to AI agents that write, test and gate changes.

Sourcery and AI CodeOps both use AI on code changes, but they do different jobs. Sourcery is a reviewer and scanner: it reviews each pull request your team opens and checks your repositories for security issues. AI CodeOps is a team of agents that writes a change, tests it, reviews it and holds it at a gate until people approve it. This page explains the difference, compares facts from Sourcery's own pages, and says when Sourcery is the better choice.

Facts about Sourcery were last checked on 24 October 2026.

What Sourcery is

Sourcery's docs say it reviews every pull request and scans your repositories for security issues (Sourcery docs). It reviews a pull request as soon as it opens and again when you push new commits. A review has a summary in the pull request description, a reviewer's guide that walks through the change file by file, and inline comments with suggested fixes you can apply in one click. Review rules let you encode your team's conventions as explicit checks (reviews). An extension for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf and JetBrains IDEs reviews your working changes before you open a pull request (IDE).

On GitHub, a status check named Sourcery review reports the review state, and security findings can block a pull request from merging once you require that check in branch protection (status checks).

What AI CodeOps is

AI CodeOps runs AI software-engineering sessions in your browser. You describe a task. Agents plan it, write the change against your repository, run your tests in a sandbox and review the result. A Security Auditor agent is one of the reviewers (secure). The change waits at a release gate until tests pass, no high or critical finding is open and the required approvals are in.

Where Sourcery is the better choice

  • Your developers write the code and you want a reviewer on every pull request. That is Sourcery's main job. AI CodeOps reviews only the changes made in its own sessions, not pull requests people open directly on the Git host.
  • You want scheduled security scans of whole repositories. Sourcery's Team plan scans repositories nightly. AI CodeOps reviews the diff of each change it makes and has no CVE scanner or secrets scanner (security and SBOM).
  • You want review in the editor. Sourcery has IDE extensions. AI CodeOps is browser-only.
  • You maintain public repositories. Sourcery reviews them for free without an application.
  • You want SOC 2 now. Sourcery is SOC 2 Type 2 certified. AI CodeOps is not certified yet.

Where AI CodeOps fits

  • The work, not only the review. Agents plan, build and test the change, so the pull request arrives with tests already run.
  • A gate before the pull request exists. A change opens as a pull request only when tests pass, the AI review completed and no high or critical finding is open (quality gates). A code change also needs an approval from someone other than the person who launched it, when the team has another approver.
  • More Git hosts. AI CodeOps connects to Bitbucket, Gitea and Forgejo as well as GitHub and GitLab.
  • A signed record. Each change has an Ed25519-signed evidence pack you can hand to an auditor.

Using both

AI CodeOps opens ordinary pull requests, so Sourcery reviews them and runs its security checks like it does for any other pull request. If you require the Sourcery review check in branch protection, AI CodeOps pull requests have to pass it too. That gives you two independent gates on AI-written code. Frequently asked questions

Does AI CodeOps replace Sourcery?

Not always. Sourcery reviews the pull requests your team opens and scans your repositories for security issues. AI CodeOps writes the change with AI agents, tests and reviews it, and holds it at a gate. Some teams will want both.

Can Sourcery block a merge?

Yes, on GitHub. Its Sourcery review status check can gate merges when you require it in branch protection. AI CodeOps blocks earlier, by not opening the pull request until its gate passes.

Which one is free for open source?

Sourcery's Open Source plan reviews public repositories for free. AI CodeOps is free during the open beta, and its open-source program is for non-commercial OSI-licensed projects, by application.

Does either train models on my code?

Sourcery says it does not retain your code after a review and none of it is used to train models. AI CodeOps never uses prompts, code or generated output to train models.
