Copilot code review alternative: AI CodeOps

Looking past GitHub Copilot code review? AI CodeOps writes and tests the change with AI agents, reviews it, and holds it at a gate until a person approves.

GitHub Copilot code review is the AI reviewer many teams already have, because it comes with their Copilot plan. People look further for a few reasons: they want the AI to write and test the change as well as comment on it, they want a firmer gate than a Comment review, or some of their code is not on GitHub. This page says which of those AI CodeOps solves, and when you should stay with Copilot.

Copilot code review in one paragraph

GitHub's docs say Copilot reviews your pull requests, identifies issues and suggests fixes you can apply in a couple of clicks (code review). You request it from the pull request's reviewers, or have it requested automatically with a ruleset. By default it leaves a Comment review that doesn't count toward required approvals (use code review). As of October 2026 it is included in Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise, and each review uses AI credits and GitHub Actions minutes (plans).

How AI CodeOps is different

It writes the change, then reviews it

An AI CodeOps session starts from a task, not a pull request. Agents plan it, write the change against your repository and run your tests in a sandbox. Then several agents review the same diff for correctness, security, tests and docs, and their findings are merged (multi-agent code review).

The findings are a gate, not comments

A change becomes a pull request only when tests pass, the AI review completed and no high or critical finding is open. A change whose AI review could not finish is held. A code change also needs an approval from someone other than the person who launched the session, when the team has another approver (quality gates). The AI review never counts as that approval.

CI can ask the gate

POST /api/release/check answers whether a pull request or commit may ship, with reasons, and returns allowed: false if the check itself fails. A CI job can call it as a required check (API).

There is a signed record

Each change has an Ed25519-signed evidence pack with the task, models, findings, tests and approvals. Anyone can verify it at /evidence/verify.

When to stay with Copilot code review

  • You want a reviewer on every pull request people open. That is Copilot code review's job. AI CodeOps does not review pull requests it didn't write.
  • You already pay for Copilot. The reviewer is already in your plan.
  • You want review in the editor. Copilot reviews in VS Code, Visual Studio, Xcode and JetBrains IDEs. AI CodeOps is browser-only.
  • You use Azure DevOps. Copilot code review supports it in public preview. AI CodeOps does not connect to it.

Many teams will run both: Copilot on the pull requests people write, and AI CodeOps for the work they hand to agents.

Getting started

AI CodeOps is in open beta and free to use. Connect GitHub, create a project and run a session from the quickstart. For a side-by-side table with sources, read AI CodeOps vs GitHub Copilot code review. To use AI CodeOps from Copilot itself, see AI CodeOps for GitHub Copilot. If you also run a static analysis gate, read SonarQube alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI CodeOps a drop-in replacement for Copilot code review?

No. Copilot code review comments on any pull request on GitHub. AI CodeOps reviews the changes its own agents write, before they become pull requests. If you want a reviewer on every human pull request, keep Copilot or another reviewer.

Can I keep Copilot code review and add AI CodeOps?

Yes. AI CodeOps opens ordinary pull requests on GitHub, so Copilot can review them too, and you can connect the AI CodeOps MCP server to Copilot.

Does AI CodeOps work outside GitHub?

Yes. It connects to GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea and Forgejo. Copilot code review works on GitHub, with Azure DevOps in public preview.

How much does AI CodeOps cost?

It is free during the open beta, with a monthly AI token allowance on the platform's models. Enterprise is priced per seat through sales.
