AI CodeOps vs Gemini Code Assist

AI CodeOps vs Gemini Code Assist, as of October 2026: Google's code review on GitHub and its retirement dates, next to AI agents that write and gate changes.

Gemini Code Assist is Google's AI coding assistant, with IDE extensions and a code review app for GitHub. AI CodeOps is a team of AI agents that writes a change, tests it, reviews it and holds it at a gate until people approve it. Before comparing them, one fact matters more than any feature: Google is retiring parts of Gemini Code Assist. This page sets out the dates, compares facts from Google's own pages, and says when Gemini Code Assist still fits.

Facts about Gemini Code Assist were last checked on 24 October 2026.

Retirement dates

Google's deprecations page, last updated on 9 October 2026, lists these dates:

  • Consumer code review on GitHub: deprecated on 18 June 2026 and shut down on 17 July 2026. Google says the enterprise version of Gemini Code Assist on GitHub is not affected (consumer sunset).
  • Gemini Code Assist for individuals: the IDE extensions stopped serving requests for the individuals, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra tiers on 18 June 2026.
  • Standard and Enterprise subscriptions: no new purchases after 9 October 2026. Annual subscriptions can't be renewed after 31 January 2027, and monthly ones after 31 December 2027.

If you already have a Standard or Enterprise subscription, you can keep using it until it ends. If you are choosing a tool today, plan around these dates.

What Gemini Code Assist on GitHub does

Google's docs say Gemini Code Assist on GitHub automatically summarizes pull requests and generates in-depth code reviews (review docs). When you open a pull request it posts an initial review and is added as a reviewer. Each comment has a severity of Critical, High, Medium or Low. You can ask for more with /gemini review or /gemini summary in a comment (using it). A .gemini/ folder in the repository holds its settings, such as the lowest severity it comments on, and a style guide (customize).

The enterprise version is in Preview. It supports GitHub Enterprise Server and GitHub Enterprise Cloud, and Google calls it a separate product from Gemini Code Assist Enterprise. Google says there are no charges for using it during Preview, though a billing account is required.

What AI CodeOps is

AI CodeOps runs AI software-engineering sessions in your browser. You describe a task. Agents plan it, write the change against your repository, run your tests in a sandbox and review the result (multi-agent code review). The change waits at a release gate until tests pass, no high or critical finding is open and the required approvals are in. It is free during the open beta.

When Gemini Code Assist still fits

  • You already pay for Standard or Enterprise. Your subscription keeps working until its renewal dates, and the IDE extensions and agent mode come with it.
  • You run GitHub Enterprise Server and want AI review on every pull request. The enterprise version of the GitHub app supports it. AI CodeOps does not support GitHub Enterprise Server, and it reviews only the changes made in its own sessions.
  • You want review settings managed in Google Cloud. Google says the enterprise version lets you manage configuration and style guides across many repositories from Google Cloud.

Where AI CodeOps fits

  • The work, not only the review. Agents plan, build and test the change, so the pull request arrives with tests already run.
  • A gate on by default. A pull request opens only when tests pass, the AI review completed and no high or critical finding is open (quality gates). A code change also needs an approval from someone other than the person who launched it, when the team has another approver.
  • More than GitHub. One workspace connects to GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea and Forgejo.
  • A signed record. Each change has an Ed25519-signed evidence pack with its task, models, findings, tests and approvals.

If you are moving off Gemini Code Assist

The consumer GitHub review is gone, so a reviewer on every pull request needs a replacement either way. AI CodeOps is not that kind of tool: it reviews the changes it writes. If you want another reviewer for the pull requests people open, read AI CodeOps vs GitHub Copilot code review or AI CodeOps vs CodeRabbit. If you want AI to write and gate the change, start with the quickstart.
